Understanding Hijama
Cupping therapy, known as Hijama in Islamic tradition, has deep historical roots and spiritual significance. This therapeutic technique involves placing cups on the skin to create suction, draw, out toxins and promote healing. Hijama is not just a physical treatment but also a practice endorsed by the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The Prophetic Tradition/ The Sunnah of the Prophet
Hijama holds a revered place in Islamic medicine and is highly regarded in Hadith literature. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) spoke extensively about the benefits and virtues of cupping therapy.
Some key Hadith include:
1. The Prophet's Endorsement:

- Abu Hurairah(r.a) reported that the Messenger (PBUH) said, “Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.” [Sunan Abu Dawud Hadith No: 3861].
- “The best treatment is cupping, it removes blood, lightens the back, and sharpen the eyesight”. [Al–Hakim 4/212, At-Tirmidhi Hadith No: 3053]
2. The Prophet's Practice:

- “Indeed, there is a cure in three things: a drink of honey, cupping, and branding with fire. But I forbid my followers from branding with fire.” ( Sahih al-Bukhari 5680 In-book reference: Book 76, Hadith 3)
